For typical work, most artists hold the pencil much as for writing, with the hand resting lightly on the table (See Picture #1), though they use the pencil with far greater freedom. For short strokes, and strokes demanding considerable pressure, little arm movement is needed; the hand may swing at the wrist, or the fingers alone may perform.

Many comments herein (and from some v savvy guys) all seem 'over-technicalized' to me. (Ya like my new term???)I'll skip getting into specifics about which exact rod or blank, what's the retrieve rate or gear ratios of the reel, etc.IMHO, one can effectively fish pencils with just about ANY rod that has action from moderate-fast to moderate to slow, as long as it will effectively cast 1.5-2.75 oz, which is the common range of weights for most pencils.Since the whole idea of fishing pencils is getting them to dance or hop or pop on the surface, reels' specs don't have much, if any, impact on how one manages the plug. (That is NOT to say that reel specs like max drag, gear ratios, etc are not important in many conditions.)Every builder that I've fished with has made the same comment: 'You guys all fish them too fast. Keep them in the key areas, as opposed to trying to cover the whole damned ditch.' Canal-style pencils come more quickly to the surface, regardless of how they're weighted, so they can more readily be made to walk n talk.in the same area.Round pencils (again, just my experience) hold a lot better in bigger winds and currents.

In those conditions I've watched my flat-bottom pencils skitter more often than they've held.YMMV. Floating pencils are easier to work than sinking or loaded. Every time you jerk your rod the plug is going to go one way and then the other. Then when you start shaking it the plug is going to slosh. You don’t need to reel fast in order for the pencil to work but a varied speed is good as well.

Most good pencils really don’t need much work to get them work slash back and forth. Not sure how it’s possible to fail at it.

Keep trying I guess. Pencils are probably my favorite lures. Needlefish are fun to pencil pop too. Bass will cream a penciled needle it’s a thing of beauty.Edited May 29 by Reed422. Using cordell pencils, Biggest and mid sized, 1.25 oz Gibbs pencils and tsunami talking poppers (not exactly pencils). Being thrown with the above mentioned rods and a vr200.

I'm thinking it's a combination of inexperience and lack of line tension.Cotten Cordell! Might as well be throwing out your wife's curling iron.First thing, if you ain't throwing a Dmag pencil ( with rattles!), you ain't throwing s.t. Why else do you think they command such a premium price?Next, it's all about the rhythm. Watch a line of guys all doing it. Don't fish, just watch. When you finally cast yourself, you gotta be the ball Danny. Close your eyes. Give it a good snap towards you with the hand up on the rod shaft.

Quick half turn till you feel the slack go back to tight. Snap it again. You can do it fast, slow, whatever, just make sure that head is flipping left and right properly. If you do go cheap and keep those crappy Cordells, do yourself a favor and custom rattle can neon Chartreuse on the head.

That way you can watch the action through choppy surf at a distance to insure you're getting it. Do note this tip is less effective if your eyes are still closed. You want to get good enough such that you can make it dance with almost no retrieve so you can stay in a strike zone as long as possible. Unless of course you're on the canal, in which case after setting down your rocket launcher you'll need to rip it back across the surface as fast as possible before you tangle up with the guy rubbing your shoulder.Edited May 29 by MaxKatt.

Without watching, I'm going to guess he likes sinking for casting weight/distance, but more so the ability to drop down sink back and get fish. You're going to have to work faster to keep it on top.For someone learning I'd stay on top so you don't have to focus as much on speed and can have visual confirmation of the action. That is, of course, after the all important 'closed eye phase' to internalize the feel of proper rhythm. Highly under appreciated. It's far more about the feel.

I once watched a blind angler tie on a Gibbs pencil direct, beach a 40 on his third cast, and drive home with it. You'd have to have seen it to believe it.Edited May 29 by MaxKatt. I love Cotton Cordell pencil poppers. Probably the best “bang for your buck” I have. Not hard to learn to work a pencil properly but I do feel that floating pencils, like the Cordell, are easier to learn to use. With a floating model, you can take your time and learn how to create the right action with subtle twitches. Try to find some flat water to practice in and lob the pencil out.

Start your retrieve, get your line tight and see what the lure does with gentle twitches. You can add a little more “Oomph” after you get proficient and comfortable with slow gentle movements. Have fun with it. I love Cotton Cordell pencil poppers. Probably the best “bang for your buck” I have.

Just picked some up from Cabela's and looking forward to learning with them. They’ll serve you well. Last year the Cordell pencil was easily my top producing surface plug. I used them in the surf, from rocky shores and from boats. I started the year with only one or two of them and did so well with them that I acquired a couple dozen more. The first two are still going strong. There’s not much paint left on them anymore and the hooks needed changing a couple of times but, other than that, they are still producing as well as they ever did.
